Example:

 

The ellipse $\frac{x^2}{12}+\frac{y^2}{8}=1$ is shown below. Find the lenth of $\overline{QV}$.   A. $\sqrt{2}$     B. $\sqrt{5}$     C. 2$\sqrt{5}$     D. $2$     E. $4$

Solution: $|OV{|}^2=12,|OQ{|}^2=8$. So, $|QV|=\sqrt{|OQ{|}^2+|OV{|}^2}=\sqrt{20}=2\sqrt{5}⟶C$

Example:

The following circle has been divided into sectors, and the values shown in each sector are the angles of the sectors in radians. Find $x$.
  A. $\frac{\pi }{4}$     B. $\frac{2\pi }{3}$     C. 2$\frac{3\pi }{7}$     D. $\frac{2\pi }{11}$     E. $\frac{\pi }{9}$

Solution:

x+1.2x+1.9x+2.1x+1.4x+3.4x = 2\pi \implies \ 11x = 2\pi \implies \ x = \frac{2\pi}{11}
